Writing Critique Group, Upcoming Workshops and Writing Conferences

Susan Mathis’ workshop last night was amazing, soul refreshing and inspiring. One writer noted: “I need a critique group.” In my closing, I asked, “How many people would be interested in a critique group that meets on Saturday afternoons twice a month for 2 – 2 1/2 hours? I also shared, I don’t want to commit to or to block off time on my Saturday’s, if people aren’t interested and won’t show up.” If you are interested, this is what you need to know:

The Springs Writers Saturday Critique Group will be an open critique group. Right now this is what I envision.

  • A 10 minute teaching about how to critique, how to self-edit, hone your editing skills, etc.
  • If you plan to come and want a critique, email Scoti a copy of your manuscript three days before the meeting and RSVP to sign-up for a 20-30 minute guaranteed critique timeblock.
  • Don’t RSVP and just show up and bring copies of your manuscript for attendees to read and whoever shows up will provide feedback.
  • However, those who RSVP will receive a guaranteed 20-30 minute critique, depending upon how many RSVP, we’ll divide up the remaining time for those who did not RSVP.
  • Conclude with a 10-minute block of time to answer any questions you may have.

If you’re interested, please reply in the comments. Any suggestions you have are welcomed.

Upcoming Workshops

April 28, 2015: Unlocking Personification And Metaphor To Deepen Emotion

Time: 6 – 8 pm

Place: Room 123, lower level of Worship Center, Woodmen Valley Chapel, Building 250, 290 E. Woodmen Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80919

Do you hear that your writing isn’t strong enough? Maybe you haven’t accessed your story’s emotional depth. Beyond strong dialogue and powerful body language, sharper tools await the intrepid fiction writer. Learn how to pull out all the stops and make inanimate (and sometimes animate) objects reflect your characters internal conflicts, desires, and fears. Make the reader feel deeply without them knowing why. Also, learn how to bring metaphor into your setting to drive your story deeper. Come prepared to cut through surface techniques and sculpt the heart of raw emotion.

Speaker: Brandy Vallance fell in love with the Victorian time period at a young age, loving the customs, manners, and especially the intricate rules of love. Since time travel is theoretically impossible, she lives in the nineteenth century vicariously through her novels. Unaccountable amounts of black tea have fueled this ambition. Brandy’s love of tea can only be paralleled by her love of Masterpiece Theater Classics, deep conversations, and a good book. Brandy is the 2013 Operation First Novel winner and the 2012 winner of the ACFW Genesis Contest for historical romance. Her critically acclaimed novel, The Covered Deep, has been featured in USA TODAY and Writer’s Digest. You can connect with Brandy via her website www.brandyvallance.com, Facebook, Goodreads, Pinterest, YouTube, or Twitter @BrandyVallance.

May 26, 2015: Seven Essentials: Seven Essentials For Powerful Fiction

Time: 6 – 8 pm

Place: Room 107, lower level of Worship Center, Woodmen Valley Chapel, Building 250, 290 E. Woodmen Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80919

If you want to write powerful fiction that will not easily be forgotten, your story must include seven essentials. Through fourteen years of study, Brandy has found these secrets of the bestsellers and she’ll unpack them for you. Learn how to create characters you can relate to, use real emotions, portray vivid settings, use unexpected plot, utilize the five senses, put tension on every page, and torture the reader until the end. Take your fiction writing to the next level and create gripping stories that will make your readers fans for life.

Location of the Critique Group? You mentioned a coffee shop? Please tell us again where the group will meet.

    Irene Sutherland

  2. Thank you so much Scoti, for this wonderful opportunity to join a writing group with you. I look forward to meeting up with you and others on this writing journey of my life. Please know that I will be gone a couple of weekends at least during the summer. But I will try to work around our critique time so I don’t miss anything 🙂

    Deb Dalton

    • Deb, I’m looking forward to it. Once we get started, we can work around people’s schedules, if they all agree. Of course, summer can be a mixed-bag when it comes to people’s vacation schedules. We won’t schedule any critique groups on three-day holidays.

  3. Is the group opened to inexperienced writers who are not familiar with critique groups? What size submission is appropriate? When will a schedule be available?

    Thank you,
    Buck Jones

    • Yes, the critique group is open to inexperienced writers. I’m working on the guidelines. I will have the schedule available by the next Springs Writers meeting. Am working on a place to meet.
